SATURDAY 4 OCTOBER 2008
Adelaide Icons that are Churchill Fellows’ places of work and interest:
9.30—11.00 am HISTORIC ADELAIDE OVAL
War Memorial Drive, North Adelaide www.cricketsa.com.au
Host: Mike Deare, CEO South Australian Cricket Association (SACA) and 1979 Churchill Fellow.
Adelaide Oval is widely regarded as the most picturesque test cricket ground in the world. Established in 1873, the oval has St Peter’s Cathedral rising behind the elegant Edwardian scoreboard and huge spreading Moreton Bay Fig trees at the northern end. See cricket memorabilia at the Adelaide Oval Museum housed in the Sir Donald Bradman Stand, the old Scoreboard, Victor Richardson and Clarrie Grimmett Gates, Bradman Room, Dressing Room and Favell-Dansie Indoor Centre. We will enjoy morning tea before walking 500 metres along the beautifully landscaped River Torrens to the Adelaide Zoo. The walk is flat and easy so don’t worry but transport will also be available if you wish.
11.30—1.30 pm ADELAIDE ZOO
Frome Road, Adelaide www.zoossa.com.au
Hosts: David Schultz (1980 Fellow), Greg Johnston (2004 Fellow), Rob Morrison (1972 Fellow) and Robert Baker (1984 Fellow).
Adelaide Zoo is home to over 3400 animals and almost 300 species of exotic and native mammals, birds, reptiles and fish exhibited in magnificent botanic surroundings focusing on endangered and rare animals.
The Zoo is the second oldest zoo in the nation and represents a significant and important part of South Australia’s heritage and social history. It is unique among Australian zoos as it has retained many original and significant architectural features giving it a style and character all its own.
Churchill Fellows will give us the inside story on the Zoo and its inhabitants — a perspective not normally provided to visitors.
We will lunch in the Rotunda whilst experiencing the sights, sounds (and possibly smells!) of the Zoo.
We will then walk 500 metres through more stunning parklands to the Botanic Gardens and the National Wine Centre. Once again the walk is flat and easy with transport available if you wish.
2.00—4.00 pm NATIONAL WINE CENTRE
National Wine Centre, Corner Botanic and Hackney Roads, Adelaide www.wineaustralia.com.au
Hosts: Robin Shaw (2007 Fellow) and Mark Swann (2002 Fellow)
Set in the grounds of the Botanic Gardens is the architecturally interesting building of the National Wine Centre… almost as controversial as the Sydney Opera House!
If you have ever had a question about wine, which you have been afraid to ask, then this visit to the National Wine Centre of Australia provides you with a unique opportunity to explore the answers. The Wine Centre showcases and promotes awareness of more than 10,000 different Australian wines and more than 60 wine regions and our Fellows will ensure we know more about at least some SA wines before we leave.
Central to the National Wine Centre of Australia is the Wine Discovery Journey, which takes visitors on an interactive journey through the past, present and future of the Australian wine industry.
PENFOLDS MAGILL ESTATE VISIT. We have been able to arrange a special visit to the original Penfolds winery at Magill Estate. The numbers will be limited to 20 people so BE QUICK! Interstate people will take preference but register your interest soon as there is a queue of “locals” who want to go! The visit will include a tour of the old fermenting cellar (still in use) and the Museum Tunnels containing much history of the wine industry and in particular Max Schubert and Grange as well as $millions of stock of the top Bin wines. This will be followed by a tasting of Icon and limited release wines including Grange and will be conducted by a senior Penfolds winemaker and Mark Swann.(Fellow 2002). There will be an opportunity to purchase some of these wines at the Cellar Door after the tasting.
The group who go to Magill Estate will leave the Wine Centre via minibus at 3.00 and finish at 5.00 pm. The minibus will then bring you back to your city hotels. Please note that this tour will mean that you have limited time before the gala dinner.
7.00 pmCONVENTION GALA DINNER
Adelaide Pavilion, South Terrace, Adelaide
Host: Loris Glass SA CFA President (2003 Fellow)
Come and enjoy an evening of friendship, fellowship, great food and wine at the Adelaide Pavilion restaurant set in the beautiful Veale Gardens.
Be entertained by our very own talented Churchill Fellows. Formal is the dress of the evening but friendship is the theme. This promises to be a night not to be missed with more than a few surprises!
And sensational raffle and door prizes to be won.
SUNDAY 5 OCTOBER 2008
9.30 am
Meet at the Army Torrens Parade Ground, corner King William Street and Victoria Drive, Adelaide. Buses will depart promptly at 9.45 am for Liquid Metal Studio.
10.00—11.00 am LIQUID METAL STUDIO
Host: Meliesa Judge (2001 Fellow)
Liquid Metal Studio is a fully independent sculpture studio and art-bronze foundry. They cast using an ancient technique which produces very specialist highly detailed castings and only cast their own work. So it is all original artwork in the fascinating setting of a fully operational foundry. They are currently working on the last stages of a major national sculpture commission, the largest figurative project of its kind currently happening in Australia. The very last of the eight figures will still be in the workshop in October (due to be installed in Melbourne in November) — so it is perfect timing for the Churchill National Convention.
From the studio we will proceed to Carrick Hill where Meliesa’s (and partner Will Kuiper’s) work sits comfortably in the beautiful gardens of this House.
11.30—1.00 pm CARRICK HILL
Host: Richard Heathcote (2007 Fellow)
Carrick Hill is fortunate in being one of the few period homes in Australia to survive with its original contents almost completely intact and its grounds undiminished. It was a centre of stylish living; and friends hold fond memories of a house constantly filled with laughter, parties, artists, music, good wine, fine food and dancing; and heady with the scent of masses of flowers. We will enjoy morning tea with stories from a very recent Fellow and then enjoy the house and garden.
1.30—3.30 pm LUNCH AND FAREWELL CEREMONY
Regattas at the Adelaide Convention Centre, North Terrace Adelaide
As many of our interstate Fellows do not have a public holiday on Monday 6 October, we will have a grand finale farewell mid afternoon at the conclusion of a fabulous Sunday lunch at Regattas overlooking the Torrens just a few paces west of where we began and close to all city hotels for those who need to make their way to the airport.
This will be a time of celebration and awards for all — make sure you are part of the entire weekend to be in the running for these prestigious mementos of the 2008 national convention.
MONDAY 6 OCTOBER 2008
(all the following are at Fellows’ own cost)
9.00 am BOTANIC GARDENS AND BREAKFAST
Adelaide Botanic Gardens, North Terrace Adelaide www.environment.sa.gov.au/botanicgardens/adelaide.html
Host: Steve Meredith (2000 Fellowship)
You may choose to start the day with a relaxed breakfast at the restaurant set in the middle of the beautiful gardens or join us a little later as we meet Steve at the gates of the Adelaide Botanic Gardens. He has chosen a few very special pieces of the garden to show us including the Bicentennial Conservatory which is the largest single span conservatory in the southern hemisphere. This elegant steel superstructure supports the 2434 square metres of toughened glass which forms the roof, walls and doors. Its glistening and distinctive shape is a landmark particularly for visitors flying into Adelaide. It houses a display of lowland tropical rainforest plants from northern Australia, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and the nearby Pacific Islands. Many of these plants are at risk or endangered in their natural habitats. (The tour of the Botanic Gardens will not incur a cost.)
12 noon GOLF AND LUNCH AT THE ROYAL ADELAIDE GOLF CLUB
Host: Mark Swann (2002 Fellow)
For those interested in golf we have been able to arrange for a limited number of Tee times on Monday 6th at ROYAL ADELAIDE. As you would know this course has always been considered as second only to the “composite” course at Royal Melbourne. The Eisenhower Cup (World Amateur Championships) will commence at the course on the following Friday so it will be at its very best and toughest! There will also be an option to have lunch at the club either before or after we play.
Please could anyone interested contact Mark Swann (Fellow 2002) to arrange groups and times (0408824606) The sooner the better!
There are several other options being arranged for Monday and the days prior to and after the convention. So watch this space for news on visits to galleries such as Aptos Cruz with Fellow Milton Moon, food and wine package tours in places like the Barossa arranged by Fellow Robin Shaw and additional specialist tours of Adelaide Festival Centre arranged by Fellow Jane Rossetto.
